In Loving Memory of Jeffery Scott
The Troup County community is mourning the tragic and sudden loss of Jeffery Scott, 54, whose life was taken in a senseless act of violence on February 4. What began as an ordinary evening ended in heartbreak, leaving family, friends, and loved ones struggling to process the shock and pain of his passing.
On that evening, deputies with the Troup County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call at 209 Big Springs Mountville Road, where two adult men had been shot. When deputies arrived, they found both victims suffering from gunshot wounds and immediately began life-saving measures until Fire Department and EMS personnel arrived. Despite their efforts, Jeffery Scott was pronounced deceased at the scene. The second victim, Walter Keene, 50, was transported to Wellstar West Georgia Medical Center for treatment of his injuries.
Authorities later reported that the suspect, Zachary Thompkins, 32, was taken into custody without incident. Investigators determined that Thompkins had come to the location to confront one of the victims over a prior disagreement, and during the confrontation, he pulled out a firearm and shot both men before leaving the scene. Thompkins now faces charges including Murder, Aggravated Assault, and Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Crime.
But beyond the official reports and legal proceedings, Jeffery Scott was a man who mattered deeply to those who knew him. He was someone’s son, someone’s friend, someone whose presence brought familiarity, laughter, and connection into the lives of others. His story cannot be reduced to the circumstances of his death. He lived a life filled with moments, relationships, and experiences that shaped who he was—a life that deserved many more years.
Those who loved Jeffery will remember the way he spoke, the way he smiled, and the everyday moments that now carry so much meaning. Whether he was sharing a conversation, lending a hand, or simply being there, his presence left an imprint on the people around him. His passing has created a void that words cannot fully express, and his loved ones now carry the heavy burden of grief and unanswered questions.
This tragedy also serves as a painful reminder of how quickly conflict can escalate and how irreversible the consequences of violence can be. A disagreement, a moment of anger, a single decision—these can change countless lives forever. As the community reflects on this incident, many are calling for peace, understanding, and compassion, hoping that no more families will have to endure such devastating loss.
As we remember Jeffery Scott, we honor his life, not just his death. We honor the memories he created, the people he touched, and the love he shared. Though he is gone, he will never be forgotten. His memory will live on in the hearts of those who knew him and in the stories that will continue to be told about him.
To Jeffery’s family and friends, may you find strength in the love surrounding you, comfort in cherished memories, and peace in knowing that his life had meaning and impact. Grief is a long and difficult journey, but love never truly fades.
