In Loving Memory of Chris Haverly

In Loving Memory of Chris Haverly (1970s–2026)

On January 28, 2026, the animal welfare community across Southwest Virginia and beyond lost a true hero, advocate, and compassionate soul. Chris Haverly, the founder of Tri-State Animal Rescue, tragically passed away in a vehicle crash while returning home from one of his weekly animal transport missions. He died doing what he had devoted his life to—saving animals and giving them a second chance at life.

Chris was a man driven by purpose, empathy, and an unwavering belief that every animal deserved love, safety, and a future. Week after week, without seeking recognition or praise, he transported dozens of dogs and cats from overcrowded, under-resourced shelters to partner rescues where they could find care, rehabilitation, and forever homes. These journeys were more than just miles on the road—they were lifelines, bridging the gap between despair and hope for countless animals.

On that tragic day, Chris had once again completed a successful transport to Staunton. The animals were safely delivered, their futures brighter because of his dedication. As he began the drive home, his rescue vehicle was involved in a fatal accident. While his life was taken far too soon, his legacy of compassion and service remains indelible.

Those who knew Chris speak of his boundless kindness, tireless work ethic, and quiet humility. He was the kind of person who never turned away from a challenge, who answered calls for help at any hour, and who believed that small acts of kindness could change the world. To fellow rescuers and volunteers, he was a mentor, a leader, and a source of inspiration. To the animals he saved, he was their lifeline—the gentle hands that carried them from fear to safety.

Chris founded Tri-State Animal Rescue with a vision rooted in empathy and action. He understood the heartbreaking realities facing shelters in rural communities and refused to accept that limited resources should determine an animal’s fate. Through partnerships, transports, and tireless advocacy, he helped reduce euthanasia rates, expanded adoption opportunities, and built a network of hope across state lines. His work transformed countless lives—both animal and human.

Beyond his rescue work, Chris was known for his warm spirit and generous heart. He had a way of bringing people together, reminding others why compassion matters, and showing that ordinary individuals can make extraordinary differences. His laughter, dedication, and steadfast commitment will be deeply missed by friends, family, volunteers, and the many organizations that worked alongside him.

The loss of Chris Haverly is not only a tragedy for those who loved him, but for every animal whose future he helped shape. His legacy lives on in every adoption, every second chance, and every life saved because he cared enough to act. The animals he transported, the shelters he supported, and the communities he strengthened will forever carry his imprint.

As we mourn his passing, we also celebrate his life—a life defined by service, compassion, and selflessness. May his memory continue to inspire kindness, advocacy, and action in the hearts of all who hear his story. May his vision for a more humane world continue through those who follow in his footsteps.

Rest in peace, Chris Haverly. Thank you for every life you saved, every mile you drove, and every heart you touched. You will never be forgotten.
