Troy Gage SMITH Arrested; APD OFFICERS MAKE ARREST OF ARMED SUBJECT AFTER STANDOFF
When APD officers heard what sounded like gunshots originating from the northwest side of Anderson at around 12:48 AM on Saturday, March 1, 2025, they were responding to numerous requests for service around the city. Shascom dispatch then alerted officers to more than ten gunshot complaints around Church Street and Briggs Street.
After arriving on the scene, officers used an APD drone to search the immediate area. Officers were notified by a local resident that a man suspect was concealed in the truck bed close to First Street and Fairgrounds Drive.
Officers contacted the male subject and began talking with him from a distance. The male subject, who was later determined to be 29-year-old Troy Gage SMITH of Oregon, refused to exit the bed of the truck and continually told officers to shoot him. SMITH told Officers he was armed with an “Assault Rifle” which was later confirmed via drone footage. SMITH refused to comply with verbal commands and a 30-minute armed standoff followed.
During the standoff, SMITH pointed the rifle at the drone several times and then held the rifle to his own head. An APD Officer, who is a trained Crisis Negotiator, was on scene and was able to negotiate with SMITH while more resources were requested.
The Shasta County Sheriff’s Department and the Redding Police Department later responded to assist APD Officers during the incident. The Redding Police Department deployed their Armored “Bear Cat” due to the severity of the situation.
APD Officers were ultimately able to de-escalate SMITH and gained his compliance. SMITH put the rifle down and surrendered without further incident.
SMITH was taken into custody and was determined to be prohibited from owning or possessing a firearm. Officers located numerous empty shell casings around SMITH’s vehicle. The firearm was seized as evidence and SMITH was booked into the Shasta County Jail for the following charges:
-29800 (a) (1) PC-Prohibited person in possession of a firearm.
-246.3 (a) PC-Willful discharge of firearm in a negligent manner.
-21310 PC-Carry a concealed dirk or dagger.
-33215 PC-Manufacturing a short-barreled rifle.
-30305 (a) (1) PC-Prohibited person in possession of ammunition.
-148 (a) (1) PC-Obstruct / Resist an Officer.
-647 (f) PC-Disorderly conduct.
The Anderson Police Department would like to thank the Redding Police Department and the Shasta County Sheriff’s Office for their assistance during this incident.
