Monique Williams Death; Suspect arrested, victim identified in deadly Charlotte hit-and-run crash – Sorto Lovo

A man was arrested and charged with hitting and killing a woman with his car in west Charlotte on Saturday, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department said.

The crash happened at the intersection of Wilkinson Boulevard and Moores Chapel Loop, where officers found 48-year-old Monique Williams unresponsive in the middle of the road. She was pronounced dead at the scene by Medic.

Williams was trying to cross the road when she was hit by a white Nissan 350Z “that was traveling at a high rate of speed,” police said on Sunday.

The car’s driver, Jonis Dany Sorto-Lovo, drove away from the scene and headed toward I-485 on Wilkinson, CMPD said. Officers found the car abandoned on the I-85 North ramp near Scott Futrell Dr.

Police later located Sorto-Lovo, 20, and screened him for impairment. He was charged with Felony Death by Vehicle, Felony Hit and Run, Reckless Driving, Driving While License Revoked and Driving After Consuming Under 21.

Williams next of kin has been notified of her death.

This crash, which happened around 4 a.m., was the second fatal crash involving a pedestrian in the span of a few hours on Saturday morning.
