Irwan Paez Death; Houston: 17-year-old shooting victim identified by loved ones

A 17-year-old student from Aldine ISD was shot and died on Thursday, according to police, close to a McDonald’s on West Road. Irwan Paez has been named as the victim by family and friends.

Around 3:00 p.m., a fatal shooting took place in the vicinity of the North Freeway on 185 West Road.

The fact that the incident was caught on mobile phone video was verified by authorities, and this information was crucial to the inquiry.

The shooting, according to HPD, was the result of two days of increasingly heated altercations between two groups of teenagers, all of whom are thought to be Aldine High School students.

A dispute between the two groups began at a soccer game, where one group allegedly flashed a firearm at the other, escalating tensions.

The groups encountered each other again after school at neighboring fast-food restaurants.

Video footage shows the victim and his friends approaching a red Dodge Ram 1500 truck, which was waiting in the McDonald’s drive-thru line.

As the victim reached into the truck, the suspect fired a gun, striking the teen.

The truck then sped away from the scene, appearing to run over the victim in the process.

HPD confirmed that Irwan Paez succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

By 9:30 p.m. Thursday, investigators detained three persons of interest after locating and stopping a vehicle linked to the suspect’s truck near Tidwell and North Wayside in northeast Houston.

Grieving family members and Aldine ISD administrators gathered at the scene of the fatal shooting, expressing shock and sorrow over the tragic loss of a young life.

Aldine ISD issued the following statement regarding the incident:

“Aldine ISD has become aware of a shooting that took place off campus after school. During this incident, an Aldine student was fatally injured. The safety and security of Aldine ISD’s students and staff will always be our top priority. As such, an investigation is underway.”

The Houston Police Department’s Homicide Division continues to investigate the shooting, including the involvement of those detained and whether additional suspects may be at large.

Anyone with information related to this case is urged to contact HPD at (713) 308-3600 or Crime Stoppers of Houston at (713) 222-TIPS (8477).
