In Loving Memory of Victims of the Pawtucket Ice Rink Shooting
The community of Pawtucket, Rhode Island, is grappling with unimaginable tragedy following a deadly shooting that occurred on Monday afternoon during a high school hockey game. What was meant to be a joyful celebration of graduating seniors on Senior Night turned into chaos, heartbreak, and loss, leaving families, students, and spectators traumatized.
According to authorities, the incident took place at approximately 2:30 p.m. at an ice rink hosting a matchup between the Coventry–Johnston cooperative hockey team and the Blackstone Valley Schools team, which includes students from St. Raphael Academy, Providence Country Day School, and the public school districts of North Providence and North Smithfield. The rink was filled with dozens of students, parents, and community members who had gathered to celebrate the achievements of graduating seniors when the violence erupted.
Authorities have identified the suspected shooter as 56-year-old Robert K. Dorgan of North Providence, also known as Roberta Esposito. Officials allege that Dorgan opened fire in the stands of the rink before dying from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. The incident resulted in the deaths of three people, including the suspected shooter. Among those killed was the student’s mother, Dorgan’s ex-wife, who died at the scene, and their adult daughter, who later succumbed to her injuries at the hospital.
In addition to the fatalities, three family members were transported to Rhode Island Hospital in critical condition. Authorities have not released the identities of the victims to allow families time to be notified. Witnesses described hearing rapid gunfire from the stands, sending players and spectators into a panic as they scrambled for safety. Video footage captured from a livestream of the game captured the terrifying sound of multiple shots fired in quick succession.
Law enforcement quickly secured the scene, and police vehicles surrounded the arena as emergency responders attended to the injured. Officials described the shooting as stemming from a family-related dispute and emphasized that it appears to be an isolated incident, though the trauma and shock will reverberate throughout the community for years to come.
The Pawtucket community, along with students, families, and school staff, are now grappling with grief, fear, and confusion. The tragedy has left an indelible mark on all who were present and serves as a somber reminder of the fragility of life.
