In Loving Memory of Retired Chief David L. Fender
The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department mourns the passing of Retired Chief David L. Fender, who left us on February 6, 2026. Chief Fender’s life was a testament to dedication, leadership, and service, leaving an indelible mark on the Department and the communities of Los Angeles County.
Chief Fender’s journey with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department began in December 1974 as a pre-academy deputy at Men’s Central Jail. In 1975, he graduated from the Department Training Academy as a Deputy Sheriff, beginning a career that would span more than four decades. His early assignments included the Hall of Justice Jail, Men’s Central Jail, Lakewood Station, and Industry Station. Additionally, he contributed to the Academy Training Bureau, shaping the next generation of law enforcement professionals through his guidance and mentorship.
Throughout his remarkable 43-year career, Chief Fender demonstrated unwavering commitment to public safety, the Department, and the people of Los Angeles County. His leadership and dedication were recognized through a series of well-earned promotions: Sergeant in 1986, where he served at Pico Rivera, Industry, and Walnut Stations; Lieutenant in 1996, with assignments in the Custody Division and Lakewood Station; Captain in 2002 at Lakewood Station; Commander of the Correctional Services Division in 2008; and finally, Chief in March 2014. In this role, he led the Custody Services Division with distinction until his retirement on March 31, 2017.
Chief Fender was known not only for his professional accomplishments but also for his character—steady, compassionate, and deeply committed to the men and women he led. Colleagues remember him as a mentor, a guide, and a source of inspiration, whose leadership fostered a culture of excellence and integrity throughout the Department.
Outside of his service, Chief Fender was a devoted husband and father. He is survived by his wife and two sons, who were the center of his life. His family, friends, and colleagues remember him for his warmth, wisdom, and the countless ways he positively impacted the lives of others.
As we reflect on Chief Fender’s life, we honor a man who devoted himself to service, leadership, and the safety of the community. His legacy will continue to inspire the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department and the communities he served for generations to come.
