According to the Powhatan County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to a report of a domestic assault at approximately 7:45 p.m. Upon arrival, they immediately began performing CPR on Melissa, who had suffered severe stab wounds. Despite their efforts, she was pronounced deceased at the scene. The incident also left a second adult male victim injured, who was airlifted by MedFlight to a nearby hospital and is currently listed in stable condition.
Authorities identified the suspect as Cody Travis Mulchi, 31, Melissa’s son. Following the incident, investigators reported that Mulchi fled to a neighboring residence, where a brief standoff occurred before he was taken into custody without further incident. He was transported to a hospital for evaluation, later released, and subsequently booked into the Pamunkey Regional Jail without bond. He now faces multiple charges, including second-degree murder, malicious wounding with intent to maim or kill, and assault and battery of a family or household member. The investigation remains ongoing, and additional details have not yet been released.
