RICHMOND, Va. — The Richmond community mourns the tragic loss of 23-year-old Hope Cartwright, a talented and dedicated young professional whose life was cut far too short. Hope, who served as the special projects editor for Virginia Living, was remembered by colleagues and friends as a bright, creative, and compassionate soul who brought energy, dedication, and joy to everything she did.

On the evening of Monday, February 16,tragedy struck as Hope was crossing East Cary Street at the intersection with South 2nd Street. Police reports indicate that she was struck by a vehicle making a left turn, while walking in a marked crosswalk. The driver left the scene before help could arrive. Emergency responders quickly transported Hope to a local hospital, but despite their best efforts, she succumbed to her injuries. Her passing has left a deep void in the hearts of her family, friends, coworkers, and the Richmond community.

Hope’s colleagues at Virginia Living described her as a passionate storyteller and tireless advocate for creativity and culture. She had an uncanny ability to bring out the best in those around her and inspire others through her work. Her editorials, projects, and initiatives reflected her commitment to excellence and her love for the community she called home. Those who knew Hope often spoke of her infectious smile, her curiosity about the world, and her unwavering kindness.

The Richmond Police Department acted swiftly following the tragic incident. Using video footage from traffic cameras, automatic license plate readers, and careful investigative work, officers were able to identify the vehicle involved and locate the driver within an hour. Authorities charged 41-year-old Latesha Coleman, of Richmond, with felony hit-and-run. Police Chief Rick Edwards praised the rapid response and collaborative efforts of officers, Crash Team investigators, and the Capital City Intelligence Center for bringing the investigation to a swift resolution.

“This is an excellent example of good police work from Fourth and First precinct officers and Crash Team investigators, aided by CCIC and the narrow, sharp focus of Flock technology to produce a rapid arrest for this tragic collision,” Chief Edwards said. “While no investigation can undo a loss like this, the department is committed to pursuing justice and safety for all citizens.”

Hope’s family, friends, and community members continue to grieve her untimely passing.
