The Whiteville community is mourning the heartbreaking loss of Evelyn Rorie, who tragically passed away on Saturday evening, February 7, 2026, following a devastating motor vehicle accident. At 82 years old, Evelyn’s life was one of grace, quiet strength, and unwavering devotion to her family and community—qualities that will forever be remembered by those who had the privilege of knowing her.
According to the Whiteville Police Department, Evelyn was traveling as a passenger in a silver Dodge Ram driven by her husband when the crash occurred near the intersection of JK Powell Boulevard and West Burkhead Street around 6 p.m. Witnesses described a harrowing scene, recalling the terrifying sound of impact that “sounded like an explosion” as the collision unfolded. Despite the swift response of emergency personnel, Evelyn was pronounced deceased shortly after arriving at Columbus Regional Hospital. Her husband was airlifted to Novant Health New Hanover Regional Medical Center, where he remains in critical condition, and the driver of the second vehicle was treated and released.
