In Loving Memory of Becky Brooks

(Jackson County, COLO) – The Jackson County community is mourning the tragic loss of Becky Brooks, who passed away on February 12, 2026, following a devastating head-on collision on Highway 40 near Steamboat Springs. Becky, 71, was traveling in her Nissan Titan when her vehicle collided with a Jeep Grand Cherokee around 5:32 p.m., resulting in her untimely death at the scene.

Becky was known for her warm heart, her love of family, and the quiet strength she brought to every situation. Friends and neighbors remember her as a compassionate soul who could light up a room with her smile and bring comfort to those around her. Her passing leaves a void in the community and in the lives of all who were fortunate to know her.

The accident occurred near milepost 156 on Rabbit Ears Pass, a notoriously winding section of Highway 40. The Colorado State Patrol immediately responded to the scene, closing the highway between milepost 139 and 158 for investigation. Traffic has since been partially restored with alternating lanes, but authorities have not provided an estimated time for a full reopening. Alternate routes were advised through Highway 131 and Oak Creek to Toponas, and on to Kremmling, as traffic was rerouted around the closure.

The Colorado State Patrol Vehicular Crimes Unit is leading the investigation to determine the circumstances that led to the collision. Meanwhile, loved ones, friends, and the Jackson County community are grappling with the shock and sadness of losing Becky so suddenly.

Becky’s life touched many. She was a mother, grandmother, sister, and friend whose generosity, kindness, and warmth will be remembered for years to come. Those who knew her have taken to social media and local gatherings to share stories and pay tribute, expressing their grief and the deep impact she had on their lives.

The community remembers Becky not only for her gentle and caring spirit but also for her love of the outdoors and her connection to the beautiful Colorado landscapes she called home. Her memory will forever be cherished in the hearts of those who loved her, and her legacy of kindness and warmth will continue to inspire those she leaves behind.

As Jackson County continues to process this heartbreaking loss, the message remains clear: cherish your loved ones, drive safely, and hold close the memories of those who are gone too soon. Becky Brooks will be dearly missed, but her memory will live on in the hearts of all who were privileged to know her
