In Loving Memory of Richard McClung
Boone County, Illinois, is grappling with the tragic loss of an 83-year-old man, Richard McClung of Rockford, following a small plane crash in Poplar Grove on Saturday afternoon. The incident, which occurred in the early hours of the afternoon, ended a life that, while controversial in its history, was marked by decades of experiences, connections, and personal history in the Rockford area.
According to the Boone County Coroner’s Office, an autopsy performed on February 17 confirmed that McClung’s cause of death was injuries sustained in the crash. The aircraft involved was identified as a Wittman W-8, registered to McClung in FAA records. The details of the crash, including whether it was mechanical failure, pilot error, or another factor, remain under investigation by the coroner’s office, the Boone County Sheriff’s Department, and the National Transportation Safety Board. At this time, authorities have stated there is no known connection between the pilot and the home his plane crashed into.
While Richard McClung’s life came to a tragic and sudden end, his life was also marked by complex and controversial legal matters. McClung appears on the Illinois State Police Offender Registry as a “lifetime registrant,” following a charge of aggravated criminal sexual abuse involving a six-year-old victim in 2007. Additionally, a civil lawsuit filed in January 2025 alleges abuse of an 8-year-old girl connected to his role within the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, where he held a position as second counselor to the bishop. McClung responded to the lawsuit in June 2025, disputing the claims on the grounds that the plaintiff lacked sufficient knowledge to form a belief regarding the truth of the allegations.
Even amid these serious controversies, the focus now rests on the tragic plane crash that ended his life. Aviation incidents involving small planes are sudden, often leaving communities stunned and searching for answers. McClung, at 83, had many decades behind him, navigating a complex life in both personal and public spheres. While his past includes difficult chapters, the final moments of his life were defined by the unpredictability of flight and the fragility of human existence.
The impact of this tragedy resonates not only with investigators and emergency responders but also with the Rockford and Poplar Grove communities, who now face the reality of a life ended in a violent accident. In these moments, the focus is on honoring the process of investigation, understanding the circumstances, and ensuring that safety measures in aviation continue to protect others in the future.
While Richard McClung’s life story contains difficult and controversial elements, it also reminds us of the complexity of human lives and the profound effect of sudden tragedy. The Boone County Coroner’s Office, law enforcement, and federal agencies continue their work to bring clarity to the events of that Saturday afternoon, providing closure and understanding for the communities involved.
As the investigation continues, may those affected find support, understanding, and peace amid the shock of this event. Though his life ended in an unforeseen accident, the circumstances serve as a somber reminder of the unpredictability of life and the need to cherish every moment.
