In Loving Memory of Shihadeh Bir
The community of Columbia, South Carolina, is mourning the heartbreaking loss of 54-year-old Shihadeh Bir, whose life was tragically taken in a senseless act of violence on Sunday afternoon. His passing has left family members, friends, and neighbors grappling with grief and searching for understanding in the wake of such a devastating event.
According to the Richland County Sheriff’s Department, deputies responded to a shooting on Cutlers Court that claimed Bir’s life. Authorities allege that 23-year-old Rasheed Hawkins met Bir at the location for what was believed to be an arranged meeting involving the sale or purchase of an iPhone. Investigators say the encounter turned tragic when Hawkins allegedly intended to rob Bir, leading to the fatal shooting. Hawkins has since been charged with murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime.
Richland County Coroner Nadia Rutherford officially identified Shihadeh Bir as the victim on Monday evening, bringing confirmation to a grieving family and community. Hawkins was arrested around 1 a.m. Monday and is currently being held at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center. A bond hearing was held, with the decision deferred to Circuit Court as the legal process continues.
While the investigation unfolds and court proceedings move forward, the focus for many remains on remembering the man whose life was cut short. Shihadeh Bir was more than a name in a news release. He was a son, perhaps a father, a friend, a neighbor—someone who had lived 54 years filled with experiences, relationships, dreams, and contributions that mattered deeply to those who knew him.
Those who lose loved ones to violence often describe a unique and overwhelming pain—the suddenness, the unanswered questions, and the void left behind. For Bir’s family, what was meant to be an ordinary day ended in unimaginable sorrow. A simple meeting, something routine in today’s world of online marketplaces and person-to-person sales, became the setting of a tragedy no one could have foreseen.
In moments like these, communities are reminded of both fragility and resilience. The loss of Shihadeh Bir serves as a solemn reminder of how precious life is and how quickly circumstances can change. It also underscores the importance of vigilance, compassion, and collective responsibility in ensuring safer interactions and neighborhoods.
As loved ones prepare to lay Bir to rest, they carry not only their grief but also their memories—shared laughter, meaningful conversations, milestones celebrated, and quiet everyday moments that now feel even more significant. Though his life ended far too soon, the impact he had during his 54 years will continue to echo in the hearts of those who cherished him.
The road to healing will not be easy. Grief does not follow a straight path, and justice proceedings can reopen wounds even as they seek accountability. Yet through it all, the memory of Shihadeh Bir stands at the center. His story is not defined solely by the manner of his passing, but by the life he lived before that tragic day.
May his family find strength in one another, comfort in their faith and community, and peace in knowing that his life mattered. May neighbors in Columbia come together in unity, supporting one another and reaffirming their commitment to safety and compassion.
In loving memory of Shihadeh Bir, may he be remembered not for the violence that took him, but for the life he lived and the love he leaves behind.
