In Loving Memory of Tater Johnson
It is with profound sadness and heavy hearts that we remember Tater Johnson 19 years old , a beloved member of the Iowa Lakes Community College baseball team, whose life was tragically lost in a devastating bus accident on Highway 4 in Calhoun County, Iowa. The accident, which occurred on February 10, 2026, involved a rollover of a bus carrying members of the baseball team and has left the Iowa Lakes community, family, friends, and teammates in shock and deep mourning.
According to the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office and Iowa State Patrol, the accident occurred around 11:06 a.m. when the bus went off the road and overturned into a ditch. Thirty-three people were on board at the time, and due to the scale of the incident, emergency responders declared a Mass Casualty Incident. Fire departments, EMS teams, and law enforcement agencies from the surrounding areas rushed to the scene to assist the injured. Tragically, Tater Johnson lost his life in the crash, while 32 other occupants were triaged and transported to various hospitals, some with serious injuries requiring airlift via medical helicopters.
Tater was more than an athlete; he was a teammate, a friend, and a valued member of the Iowa Lakes community. His dedication, hard work, and love for baseball reflected his character both on and off the field. He approached every challenge with determination, encouraged those around him, and was a source of positivity and inspiration to his teammates. His presence on the team was marked not only by his athletic ability but by the loyalty, kindness, and camaraderie he shared with his peers.
