In Loving Memory of Tyanaa Nattaway and Crystal Mary Ellen Beardy
The Winnipeg community is mourning the heartbreaking loss of Tyanaa Nattaway, 18, and Crystal Mary Ellen Beardy, 48, both members of the Garden Hill First Nation, whose lives were tragically cut short in a devastating fire on February 7, 2026. This unimaginable tragedy has left families, friends, and the community in profound grief, grappling with the sudden loss of two cherished lives.
According to the Winnipeg Police Service Homicide Unit, the fire occurred in the 300 block of Agnes Street and was deliberately set following a dispute between family members. The victims, who had been residing in Winnipeg, were among multiple occupants of the home. Emergency responders arrived quickly, and the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service battled the blaze while evacuating the home. Despite their heroic efforts, Tyanaa and Crystal succumbed to their injuries, leaving an irreplaceable void in the hearts of those who knew and loved them.
Tyanaa, at just 18 years old, was a young woman with her whole life ahead of her. Though her time was short, she touched the lives of those around her with her energy, warmth, and spirit. Friends and family remember her as someone full of promise, a bright light whose kindness and presence made a lasting impression on everyone she met. Her laughter, her dreams, and her potential will forever be mourned and cherished by those who loved her.
Crystal, 48, was a pillar of strength, wisdom, and compassion. A devoted member of her family and community, she carried herself with dignity and care, offering guidance and support to those around her. Her presence brought comfort and stability, and her loss is deeply felt not only by her loved ones but by the community that admired her courage, generosity, and resilience.
This tragedy was compounded by the knowledge that the fire was intentionally set, and authorities have since arrested 30-year-old Douglas Wayne Jr. Nattaway, who was previously known to both victims, charging him with Second Degree Murder x2 and Arson Disregard Human Life x2. The ongoing investigation continues, as the community seeks answers and justice for Tyanaa and Crystal.
The Winnipeg Police Service and Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responded swiftly and valiantly, rescuing multiple occupants and providing urgent care to those affected. Five people were transported to the hospital, three in critical condition and two stable. Tragically, two women—Tyanaa and Crystal—did not survive, while others have since been upgraded to stable condition.
As we mourn the loss of these two remarkable women, we honor their memory by remembering the joy, love, and light they brought into the lives of others. Tyanaa and Crystal were more than victims of a tragic event—they were beloved daughters, sisters, friends, and community members whose legacies of kindness, warmth, and strength will live on.
In this time of sorrow, may their families find solace in the love and support of their community. May we all hold Tyanaa and Crystal in our hearts, honoring the lives they lived and the memories they leave behind.
Rest in peace, Tyanaa Nattaway and Crystal Mary Ellen Beardy. You will be forever remembered, deeply missed, and eternally cherished. 🕊️
