In Loving Memory of Jose de Venecia Jr.
It is with deep sorrow and a profound sense of national mourning that the Philippines bids farewell to former House Speaker Jose de Venecia Jr., a towering statesman, visionary leader, and devoted public servant whose life was dedicated to the service of country and people. De Venecia passed away on Tuesday in Manaoag, Pangasinan, at the age of 89, leaving behind a legacy that will forever be etched in the history of the Philippine Republic.
In a heartfelt statement, the De Venecia family announced his passing “with heavy hearts,” remembering him not only as a distinguished public figure but as a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and family patriarch. For more than six decades, he dedicated his life to nation-building, shaping laws, strengthening institutions, and advancing peace, dialogue, and cooperation both locally and on the global stage.
Jose de Venecia Jr. was a man of many callings—journalist, diplomat, entrepreneur, legislator, and international advocate for peace. His journey was one of humility and perseverance. Born in Dagupan City on December 26, 1936, he rose from modest beginnings, carrying with him the values of hard work, compassion, and service. His wife fondly recalled his childhood memories of waking to birdsong and riding carabaos in the fields—simple moments that grounded him throughout a life of extraordinary achievement.
In public service, De Venecia’s contributions were monumental. He served seven terms in the House of Representatives, five of which he held the position of Speaker, making him the longest-serving Speaker in the post-war Congress. Known to many as “JDV” or “Speaker Joe,” he was a master consensus-builder and political strategist, forging the historic Rainbow Coalition and authoring landmark legislation that strengthened the Philippine economy, democracy, and governance. His vision helped shape modern Philippine policy and guided the nation through periods of political and economic transformation.
Beyond national politics, De Venecia was a global statesman. He championed international cooperation, peace-building, and interfaith dialogue, believing that unity among nations and cultures was essential for lasting peace. His voice resonated in global forums, and his efforts brought the Philippines into the conversation on diplomacy, conflict resolution, and global development.
His love for his home province and city never waned. Dagupan City Mayor Belen Fernandez praised him as a leader who played a crucial role in rebuilding the city after the devastating 1990 earthquake. His leadership, vision, and commitment were instrumental in Dagupan’s recovery and renewed strength, proving that true leadership is measured not only by words, but by action and compassion in times of crisis.
Jose de Venecia Jr. is survived by his beloved wife, Pangasinan Fourth District Representative Gina de Venecia; their children and their spouses, including former Representative Christopher de Venecia; their grandchildren; extended family; and the cherished memory of their late child, KC de Venecia. His family stands as a testament to his devotion not only to the nation, but to home and kin, where he was known as a loving husband, a guiding father, and a proud grandfather.
As the nation mourns his passing, we also celebrate a life that helped shape the Philippine Republic. His legacy endures in the laws he authored, the institutions he strengthened, the bridges he built between people and nations, and the enduring pursuit of peace and unity he championed. His story is one of service, resilience, faith, and unwavering commitment to the Filipino people.
To Manay Gina, Toff, and the entire De Venecia family, our thoughts and prayers are with you in this time of grief. May you find comfort in the immense legacy of love, service, and honor that Manong Joe leaves behind.
Rest in peace, Manong Joe. Maraming salamat sa iyong walang kapantay na serbisyo sa bayan. Your nation honors you, your people remember you, and your legacy will live on forever.
